Dilemma-this one word aptly summarizes the socio-economic plight of farmers in India.

Farmers today stand at a crossroads, almost transfixed. The original farmers of rural India are being forced to quit farming and end up as migrant laborers in metropolitan areas. Meanwhile, some retired amateurs and urban agri-professionals are replacing them, not as intruders but as immigrants adopting agriculture as entrepreneurs, readily leaving their former occupations behind.
On one hand, natural traditional farming has become fragile, while on the other hand, commercial farming has become the new vogue among these nouveau agri-preneurs, who have discovered immense potential in planned farming.
MASS today shoulders dual responsibilities—balancing between the traditional and the professional. Being progressive, MASS aims to retain the ancient practices inherited since time immemorial, while also presenting an inclusive approach by integrating new technologies and research, and imparting training to Gen-X farmers.
MASS is committed to unfolding subtle mysteries and decoding certain magical formulas that will ultimately unite all three key stakeholders—Farmers, Farming, and their dependent Consumers.
By balancing traditional and modern scientific technologies, MASS seeks to make the entire process more cost-effective, ensuring that nutrient-rich, agri-based products are affordable for all. For this benevolent reason, MASS is also developing a platform where farmers, newcomers, and agriculture graduates can share and exchange knowledge, maximizing the profit potential for every stakeholder without encroaching on each other's interests. To achieve this, MASS is reaching out and training farmers and agriculture graduates to enhance crop yields and facilitate timely marketing of their products, thereby satisfying both producers and consumers.

ABOUT MASS

Mobile Agricultural School & Services (MASS) was initially conceptualized in 2004 and launched on 20th May 2006 as an "Institute on Wheels" to provide training to farmers and rural youth, offering immediate four-way solution in a single day. i.e. Training, Demonstration, field visit for practical training & supply of inputs to distant farmers right at their door step.

Emergence of MASS

What is MASS?

It is a unique training center with the infrastructure to conduct both “On-Farm” and “Off-Farm” training programs. Mobile Agricultural School & Services (MASS) is a legal entity with a unique moving training hall, known as the “Institute on Wheels,” designed to train farmers by reaching directly at their doorsteps.
In addition, a residential training center has been established in the Angara Block of Ranchi District in Jharkhand to bring in interested and progressive farmers, providing them with in-depth training to upgrade their knowledge and skills.
MASS is “A New Flavor in the Agricultural Extension System,” creating awareness and building capacity in the deprived community by introducing modern agricultural technology for crop production and farming systems, ultimately aiming to improve their livelihoods. MASS provides doorstep solutions from experts to increase farm productivity and enhance livelihoods.

Location and Features

The MASS registered office is located at "Parvati Kailasha," Gadi Gaon, Hotwar, Ranchi, Jharkhand. Its residential training & demonstration campus is situated on 5 acres of land at village - Lalgarh; Panchayat - Childag; Block - Angara , Ranchi. The campus is surrounded on three sides by the Getalsud Dam, offering a picturesque peninsula view.
The campus provides well-equipped residential training facilities in a scenic environment. It features demonstration plots showcasing the latest technology used for various farm practices, including agronomical and horticultural crop production. This creates a healthy environment for learning and sharing agricultural techniques.

WHAT WE DO?

"On-Farm Training"

• We operate four well-equipped and furnished buses that provide training to farmers right at their doorsteps.

• Our buses are equipped with audio-video systems designed to support skill development, training, and capacity building for farmers.

• We also offer facilities for creating educational films focused on agriculture and allied sectors.

• Perform four activities in a single day i.e. Training, demonstration, visit of farmers field & supply of inputs to make the programme effective & impactful.

"Off-Farm Facilities"

• A 5-acre campus in Angara Block, surrounded by the Getalsud Dam on three sides, offering a stunning panoramic view.

• Farming facilities for growing vegetables, fruits, and flowers, available for both demonstration and hands-on practical learning.

• Innovative units for mushroom production and vermi-composting, designed for practical training.

• High-density orchards featuring mango, pomegranate, custard apple, apple, and guava for live demonstrations.

• 20 individual plots (each 15 feet x 15 feet) dedicated to practical learning and hands-on experience.

• A drip irrigation system set up for crop irrigation and practical farmer training.

• Fields specifically designated for production of commercial fruit plants like Dragon Fruits, Apple & Straberry etc.

Short Professional Course for Semi-Skilled Rural Youth

A. Agriclinic & Agribusiness centre (AC & ABC)

MASS, in collaboration with the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad, conducts a 45-day residential course on Agri Clinic & Agri-Business Centre (AB & ABC). This program aims to develop grassroots-level functionaries and enhance agricultural practices in rural areas by fostering agri-entrepreneurs. MANAGE provides certification for the course, and refresher training programs on various agricultural topics are also organized with its support.

Infrastructure and Residential Training Facilities

For Carrying "On-Farm training programs"

• Four mobile institutes with a seating capacity of 50 farmers each.

• Well-equipped training room with teaching tools like laptops, projectors, screens, electronic boards, and generators.

• Carries seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, and study materials for distribution to farmers at low prices.

• Demonstrates techniques on farmers' fields.

For Carrying “Off-Farm Training Program"

• Training Halls: Three halls are available—one large hall with a seating capacity of 120 farmers, and two smaller halls accommodating 25 farmers each.

• Hostel: Accommodation for 81 farmers, including:

  • Three rooms with 7 beds each,

  • Four rooms with 12 beds each,

  • Three rooms with 4 beds each. Each room is equipped with attached toilets and a spacious corridor, ensuring a comfortable learning environment.

• Canteen: A well-furnished canteen facility is available.

• Guest House: An excellent guest house is provided for visiting experts & foreigners.

• Development of contents & projects for agri-ventures.
